Why should a painter pack up a bunch of gear, drive somewhere, suffer with cold or heat, worry about wild animals, fight the changing light and bugs just to paint
out? You will become a better painter guaranteed, you will paint better when working in your studio, you will “see” more colors and lighting effects than you knew existed, it’s an experience of that moment, that
day, that can never be repeated. You are in the painting zone, completely, and at one with your subject, at least for a brief time. Painting with a group adds a huge safety feature and benefits everyone. |
|
A few general helpful hints:
Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, snack, bug spray, trash bag (we are good scouts and pack out more trash then in) and your gear. For your comfort, keep your painting
equipment to a minimum. A small sketch pad to draw your composition, saves time. Some painters find a viewfinder (even an empty slide sleeve) helpful. A smaller canvas board (6” X 8”, 8” X 10”) is preferable for
plein air. A camera is a good tool to find your composition and to shoot your subject. This photo and your plein air painting will give you enough information to create a larger studio painting. |
Please Note!
When setting up please be
aware of the other painters
around
you, and avoid blocking their subjects and/or view.
If a painter is working furiously, this is probably not the best time
to talk to them. |

Thursday, July 23, 9:30am to 12:30pm
This month we are going on a field trip to Malibu. We’ll meet and paint at
the beach, 9:30–12:30, have lunch and end the day by visiting the Frederick
R. Weisman Museum of Art on the Pepperdine University campus to view the “On
Location in Malibu 2009” exhibit. The exhibition consists of paintings of
Malibu created especially for this exhibition by Artist Members of the
California Art Club, and curated by Dr. Michael Zakian, Director of the
Weisman Museum. The exhibition is part of the California Art Clubs
Centennial project to preserve and document California's heritage through
art.
Directions: 5 Freeway south to the 405 Freeway south to the 101 Freeway west, exit at Las Virgenes Road, proceed 10 miles west through Malibu Canyon, turn left at Pacific Coast Highway, travel 1.5 miles east. Entrance for parking and the nature area is at Cross Creek Road. We will caravan to lunch and the museum, which are all
very close.
There is a small parking fee at the beach; the museum entry and parking are free. It is a difficult location for
the handicaped. When you are packing to come, remember it can be windy on the beach and you might want a hat and sunscreen. It would be helpful to let us know you are coming so we can be on the lookout for you. On the day of the paint out we will have our cell phones for your convenience.

Veteran's Historical Plaza in Newhall

The design of the Plaza evokes images of a formal Victorian garden. It was
the goal of the design team to create a place of serenity and reflection in
the middle of a bustling city.

Tuesday, May 19 8:00am to 6:00pm
ANNUAL RANCHO CAMULOS SPRING PLEIN AIR ARTISTS DAY Cost: $20, which includes full day access to museum and grounds, morning snack, lunch prepared by the docents, live models, and tour.
Rancho Camulos is located on Highway 126, 9 miles west of I-5. Rancho Camulos, the "Home of Ramona," is Ventura County's only National Historic Landmark. It is the only Mexican land grant rancho in California that is open to the public and still preserved in its original rural environment. The site contains 154 historic structures within a 40 acre preserve. The buildings are surrounded by beautiful landscape features that include orange orchards, extensive rose gardens, and views of the Santa Clara Mountains. The 1994 earthquake badly damaged the historic buildings on the rancho. The Rancho Camulos Museum was formed to repair, restore, and protect this site.
Rancho Camulos was the inspiration for Helen Hunt Jackson's novel "Ramona," first published in 1884 and still in print today. The love story, set in early California, offers poetic descriptions of Southern California's landscape and a romanticized vision of the Hispanic rancho era. In walking the grounds today, one can easily slip back in time to this period in
California's history. For more information on the location visit:
www.ranchocamulos.org or phone (805) 521-1501.

Sierra Club, coming to this paint out to direct and educate
us on the history of Whitney Canyon, the wildlife
and best locations to paint. This will be the first paint-

Yellow Mustard should be in bloom.
There are no services at this location, so
maybe hold off on the second cup of coffee. We’ll be
hiking into the canyon a bit on a well-graded fire road
but you still need to keep your gear to a minimum.
Besides your painting gear bring the usual, especially
some water as there is none available

you drive on into the park you need to pay the iron
ranger $3.00. We will meet at this lot.
